Vision Support Harrogate District are very grateful and delighted to have once again been invited by The Great North Art Show to showcase a collection of the fantastic sculptures that are created by our members. We also offer our sincere thanks to Specsavers, Ripon who have kindly sponsored the sculpture exhibition this year.
Life can feel frightening and lonely if you are experiencing sight loss. There may be lots of questions you feel need answering, and having to stop doing some of the things you once loved can be upsetting. Vision Support Harrogate District exists to support and advise people in our community who are or know someone who is experiencing sight loss. Due to rural isolation or mobility issues, not everyone is able to access our drop-in centre. To help alleviate loneliness and social isolation, we are able to provide a helpline, telephone befriending, and a home visiting service. The visiting service is used as an essential tool for encouraging participation, signposting to outside agencies and supporting independent living.
Our outreach in the community includes regular social meetings arranged in Ripon and Pateley Bridge. Day trips, countryside walks, evenings out and lunchtime meals are enjoyed on a regular basis. Our Eye Clinic Liaison Officer offers practical and emotional support to those who are newly diagnosed with an eye condition.
At our Vision Support Centre, we offer a vast range of regular activities which encourage independent living and the learning of new skills, such as IT training, craft classes, social events, fitness and leisure activities. Vision Support provides these opportunities as it is vitally important that those affected with sight loss are provided with the support and encouragement to develop new skills and achieve positive outcomes. Working with resources such as clay and producing sculptures is one way of enabling our members to reach the goal towards independent living.
