Q&A with Richard Newman

Richard in his studio

What is your background?

I am a Chartered Architect and a Swiss-trained hotelier, now retired.

Explain what you do in 100 words

Now that I am retired I have three main thrusts to my life. I write novels, a travel book (coming out soon) and lead a Creative Writing Group. Second, I paint in my studio at the bottom of my garden and third, I teach French to 10 very naughty 75 year old ladies and two very good men. Known as Rireuneminute (laugh a minute) we enjoy every moment trying to get this undisciplined mob through France without too many hiccoughs! Life should never be wasted and I feel now is the time to put something back.

What five words best describe your work?

Timelessness; hunger; openness; aloneness; companionship

Some Seed Fell on Stony Ground

What are you working on at the moment?

A much larger canvas based on a smaller picture submitted to this year’s exhibition (‘…and some seed fell on stony ground’).

Which three artists inspire you?

Michael Morgan; Andrew Wyeth; Kurt Jackson

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Iron of Winter

‘… Marry that girl, you’ll never regret it.’

Favourite or most inspirational place in Yorkshire?

Flamborough Head in a winter storm.

Tell us something we don’t know

I combined my two very different skills into becoming a Director of an hotel development company, so nothing was ever wasted.
